Camping in the Negev Desert: Survival Tips and Essential Gear

The Negev is Israel's most extreme camping environment. Scorching days, cold nights, no water for 30km stretches, and some of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. It rewards prepared campers and punishes unprepared ones. Here's how to do it right.

When to Go

Best months: October through April. May through September is survivable only in the early morning/evening — midday temperatures regularly exceed 40°C.
Shoulder season sweet spot: November and March — cool days, cold nights, minimal crowds.

The Water Problem

This is the most important planning factor in the Negev. Water sources are:

  • Makhtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater): water at Mitzpe Ramon town, 20–30km sections without sources
  • Negev Highlands: seasonal springs, many dry. Check INPA maps before each section.
  • Rule of thumb: Carry 4L minimum between confirmed sources

A water filter (Sawyer Squeeze or similar) is recommended for treating natural sources.

Temperature Swings: What to Pack

The Negev has the most extreme day-night temperature swings in Israel — up to 20°C difference. In March, it can be 25°C at noon and 5°C at midnight. Your gear needs to handle both:

  • Sleep: Insulated mattress is essential — desert ground drops temperature fast after sunset. The Camp & Go Mattress ($41.99) creates an air barrier between you and the cold ground.
  • Pillow: The Pocket Pillow ($13.99) at 90g is the obvious choice — no reason to bring more weight in the desert.
  • Layers: Base layer + down or fleece mid + wind shell. Mornings are cold.

Power in the Desert

The Negev gets more sun than almost anywhere in Israel — perfect solar charging conditions. The Solar Power Bank 20,000mAh ($44.99) clips to the back of your pack and charges continuously. In direct desert sun, you can recover 3,000–4,000mAh per day — enough to keep your phone alive indefinitely.

Navigation is life in the Negev. A dead phone with no map in Wadi Tzin is a serious situation.

Cooking

Hot food matters more in cold desert nights. The BlazeKit Stove ($24.99) performs at altitude and in cold. At 120g it adds almost nothing to your desert load.

Note: gas canisters are available in Mitzpe Ramon. Stock up before heading into the crater.
