Camping in the Negev Desert: What to Pack and Where to Go in 2026

The Negev desert covers 60% of Israel and offers some of the most dramatic camping experiences in the world — Makhtesh Ramon, the colored sands of Timna, and the silent starry nights that are impossible to find anywhere else. Here's everything you need to know to camp in the Negev in 2026.

Best Negev Camping Spots

Makhtesh Ramon (Ramon Crater)

The world's largest erosion crater. Camp at the designated sites inside the crater for an otherworldly experience. The crater is 40km long and 2-10km wide. Temperatures swing dramatically — hot days, cold nights. Bring layers.

Timna Valley

Near Eilat. Ancient copper mines, mushroom rock formations, and a small lake. Beautiful sunset colors on the sandstone cliffs. Camping area available inside the park.

Ein Avdat National Park

A stunning canyon with a spring-fed pool, waterfalls, and ibex. Day hiking only officially, but camping areas are nearby. Perfect for a 2-night stay.

The Arava Valley

Between the Dead Sea and Eilat. Wild, remote camping spots. Best in winter when temperatures are comfortable.

What to Pack for Negev Camping

Water — Most Important

The Negev is a desert. There is no forgiving water source if you miscalculate. Carry 3-4 liters minimum per person per day. Summer temperatures hit 40°C+.

Sun Protection

  • Wide-brim hat
  • UV long sleeves
  • SPF50+ sunscreen
  • Sunglasses (UV400)

Sleep System

Negev nights are cold — even in summer, temperatures drop to 15°C. In winter, sub-zero is possible at elevation. The Camp and Go Inflatable Mattress insulates you from the cold ground and makes a huge difference in sleep quality. Add the Silk-Touch Inflatable Pillow for proper neck support.

Light

There are no street lights in the Negev desert. Complete darkness after sunset. The Solar LED Camping Lantern charges all day while you hike and lights your camp at night — plus charges your phone. Essential for Negev camping.

Power

No power outlets for hundreds of kilometers. The Foldable Solar Power Bank 20,000mAh recharges from the sun (which is abundant in the Negev) and keeps you connected to navigation apps and emergency contacts.

Cooking

Bring the BlazeKit Folding Stove and enough gas for your trip. Hot food and coffee at sunrise in the crater is an experience you'll never forget.

Negev Camping Rules

  • Camp only in designated areas inside nature reserves
  • No open fires in protected areas — use a gas stove
  • Pack out all waste
  • Do not disturb wildlife (especially ibex in Ramon Crater)
  • Register your route with the SPNI (Chevra Lehagant Hateva) for remote sections

Best Time to Visit

October to April is ideal. Summer (May-September) is extremely hot and dangerous for camping. Spring and autumn offer perfect temperatures and stunning desert blooms after rain.
